World Tai Chi & Qigong Day 2026 in Tucson: Join the 10 AM “Wave” at Freedom Park
Every year, on the last Saturday of April, people in parks, plazas, and community spaces across the planet step into a shared practice: Tai Chi and Qigong—together, in public, for health and harmony. That day is World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, and in 2026 we’re gathering again in Tucson to start the wave right on time.
Once again, Old Pueblo Tai Chi is teaming up with Tai Chi for Health Tucson—led by Robert Armstrong—for our third collaboration hosting the 10:00 AM local-time start.
Event details
Special Community Event: World Tai Chi & Qigong Day 2026
Arrival:9:30 AM (so we’re ready to begin the global wave at 10:00 AM)
What makes World Tai Chi Day special: the 10 AM “wave”
Unlike many global events that happen at the same moment everywhere, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day works differently—and beautifully:
Groups gather at 10:00 AM in their own local time zone.
As the earth turns, 10:00 AM reaches the next time zone, and the next.
The result is a rolling “wave” of Tai Chi and Qigong that moves across the globe—from the earliest time zones to the last—linking communities through a shared practice and intention.
This is the spirit behind the “One World… One Breath” idea you’ll often see associated with the day.
Where it came from: founders and origins (1999)
World Tai Chi & Qigong Day is widely credited as beginning in 1999, founded by Bill Douglas and Angela Wong Douglas.
It grew from a simple but powerful model: make Tai Chi and Qigong visible, accessible, and shared—so anyone, anywhere, can take part.
The mission: health, healing, and peace-building
At its heart, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day is a public-health and community movement in “festival” form:
Health education: raising awareness of Tai Chi and Qigong as mind-body practices that support balance, stress regulation, mobility, and overall well-being.
Community access: free, public-facing demos and beginner-friendly sessions that lower the barrier to getting started.
Peace and cooperation: a symbolic reminder that people across cultures can gather around calm, breath, and embodied presence—together.
What to expect at our Tucson gathering
This will be an all-levels, welcoming community practice—whether you’ve never tried Tai Chi/Qigong or you’ve been training for years.
A typical flow for a 10 AM wave event looks like:
9:30 AM — arrive, meet the community, settle in
10:00 AM — begin the global wave together
10:05–10:45 AM — guided practice (Tai Chi + Qigong blend)
10:45–11:00 AM — closing, Q&A, group photos, discussion of ways to keep practicing locally
